It should come as no surprise to those of us on the West Coast that passenger counts are down. In preparation for my Top Attractions for Cruise Visitors in San Diego and to get ready to kick off the 2012-13 cruise season, I embarked on a research project to see how the port is doing in terms of passenger visits. Here is what I learned….

By the numbers: San Diego Cruise Traffic – 2007-2012*

2007: 810,395 passengers, 238 calls, 11th busiest in the United States
2008: 921,360 passengers, 255 calls, 7th busiest in the United States
2009: 842,353 passengers, 223 calls, 7th busiest in the United States
2010: 505,427 passengers, 150 calls, 11th busiest in the United States
2011: 315,065 passengers, 104 calls, 18th busiest in the United States
2012: 270,000 passengers (estimated), 85 calls
*All numbers are based on the calendar year. Rankings based on MARAD Department of Transportation

Main Homeported Cruise Lines in San Diego: Holland America Line (first call to SD in 1996) and Celebrity Cruises (first call to SD in 1996)
