Logistics:

Closest airport

Marco Polo Airport (VCE), which is 10 miles to pier, which is a 30-minute drive (without traffic).  If a cruise line transfer has not been arranged, there are car rentals, taxis and water taxis available  at the airport.

Getting to your ship

The Port of Venice is managed by Venezia Terminal Passeggeri S.p.A., which operates three cruise ship locations in Venice:

• Stazzione Marittima – the larger cruise ships use this facility
• San Basilio
• Riva dei Sette Martiri

Directions to Stazzione Marittima from airport

• Follow blue traffic signs indicating Venezia
• At the end of the bridge on the lagoon “Ponte della Liberta,” which connects the mainland with Venice, stay in the right lane and turn right at the traffic light.
• At the end of the road there is a STOP sign: proceed straight through to the Port Security gate for entry.

Top attractions, not to be missed

• Venice is a living museum, plan to stroll around and enjoy the architecture, canals, and bridges
• Visit St Mark’s Cathedral
• Venice walking tour
• Gondola ride through the canals of  Venice
• Go off the beaten path and check out the islands of Lido,  Murano or Burano.

Special note about getting around in Venice

Ask your cruise consultant what types of transpiration options your cruise ship offers passengers in Venice. Some cruise lines will arrange shuttle boats to take guests to drop off areas near Piazza San Marco, and a cruise line shore excursion of Venice is always an option. In addition to these two options, cruisers can also learn to navigate on their own by using the Venice vaporetto, which is like a water bus or passengers can utilize a water taxi. Learn more here.

Exploring Venice can be fun if you allow yourself to get lost. Some first-time visitors (like me) have a list of landmarks to encounter when traveling to Venice. Visits to the square and basilica of San Marco, a tour of the Ducal Palace, and getting lost wandering around Venice’s canals and bridges were my top priorities. Venice’s architecture, with its gondolas on narrow canals, make this a must-see bucket list destination for sure. Walking around Piazza San Marco and through the quaint bridges and canals of Venice can keep cruise visitors happily occupied for hours. Trivia: Venice’s different names
