Silver Spirit calls on Venice, Italy “Queen of the Adriatic”
We have arrived to our final destination: Venice, Italy. The city is part of 118 small islands separated by canals that are linked by bridges. Since Silver Spirit is over-nighting in the city, guests get to spend more time getting to know Venice.
Silver Spirit docked on the San Basilio pier, which is a quay that runs from the main port area to the Fondamenta Zàttere on the Giudecca Canal. Although Silver Spirit docked close enough to walk into town, for those less inclined there is a public transport available. Water bus line 2 serves the San Basilio ACTV stop, which was the closest stop for Silver Spirit. Find out more about the Port of Venice.
Silversea Tour to the Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Basilica
Cruise guests sailing on Silver Spirit got to enjoy a full day exploring Venice. I opted for a tour of the Doge’s Palace and St Mark’s Basilica. The tour , offered by Silversea Cruises, lasted four hours with plenty of extra time left to explore on my own. “O Solo Mio” – “my sunshine”
Located in northeastern Italy, Venice is surrounded by water in the Venetian Lagoon. It was founded in the 5th century, and built upon 118 small islands. Plan to spend a lot of time walking and going up and down stairs that are necessary to connect the mini-islands together, especially near San Marco square.
Exploring Venice can be fun if you allow yourself to get lost. Some first-time visitors (like me) have a list of landmarks to encounter when traveling to Venice. Visits to the square and basilica of San Marco, a tour of the Ducal Palace, and getting lost wandering around Venice’s canals and bridges were my top priorities. Venice’s architecture, with its gondolas on narrow canals, make this a must-see bucket list destination for sure. Walking around Piazza San Marco and through the quaint bridges and canals of Venice can keep cruise visitors happily occupied for hours. Trivia: Venice’s different names
- “City of Water”
