River Cruise Buzz: Vienna via Viking Skadi

Day 5: Christmas Markets in Vienna via Viking River Cruises

Today Viking Skadi docked in Vienna and cruise passengers were treated with a full day of touring.  A small group of us elected to take advantage of the the Vienna U-Bahn (subway) to transport us around Austria’s capital city. For 5 Euro we had unlimited passage on the subway because we purchased the “shoppers pass” Viking Skadi also offfered bus transport and a walking tour for guests that wanted to stay with the group.

Hofburg Palace – Statue of Emperor Franz

I stumbled upon this square on the way to a nearby Christmas market. The statue is in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph, who was a leader of the Australian Empire.  In 1804  he took over the former Chancellery of the Holy Roman Empire (building on the right) and claimed the use of the space as his apartments.

Viennese Christmas Market
Cruise passengers on Viking Skadi were offered the opportunity to take a complimentary shuttle from the ship to The Viennese Christmas Market in front of the City Hall. Some feel that this market is the best one and should not be missed.
