Port Buzz: USS Midway

San Diego’s USS Midway – a proud tradition.

Cruise visitors calling on San Diego will no doubt notice the aircraft carrier USS Midway. Spending time exploring the longest-serving American aircraft carrier of the 20th century is totally worth the time and effort.

The Buzz

It took 17 months to build the USS Midway. The keel was laid in 1942 and after that she was ready for action. The carrier cost $85.6 million to build and she was engaged in many tours from her inception until 1992 when USS Midways was decommissioned.

A visit to the aircraft carrier is a must see attraction in San Diego.

Although I have been to San Diego many times, I recently had an opportunity to discover what all the buzz was about. My only regret is that I waited so long to get onboard. There is so much history and information to be learned from the docents. The free audio tour is a great option for those wanting to get an immersive experience. Just walking around the flight deck and seeing the old planes with the background of San Diego Bay and wonderful views of Downtown is enough for those with limited time.
