Crystal Cruises is offering the cruise industry’s first hypoallergenic staterooms.

Cruise passengers wanting to book one of the 70 staterooms on Crystal Serenity can do so after the ship’s drydock this fall.

Here is the buzz:

70 Crystal Serenity staterooms will transform into a new category called Deluxe PURE Staterooms.  The new staterooms will be available after Crystal Serenity’s “Extreme Makeover” dry-dock in November 2013.  The 70 “AA” verandah rooms will undergo PURE’s seven-step air and surface purification process to remove allergens and reduce the risk of common irritants.

“Imagine returning to your room after a full day ashore in a bustling city like Rome or Bangkok, and then slipping into your purified sanctuary of ultra-clean air and hypoallergenic bedding,” says Jack Anderson, Crystal’s senior vice president, marketing & sales.  “For guests who suffer from allergies, have mild respiratory issues such as asthma, or who simply desire a respite from the air quality in many cities, these staterooms will become a haven of fresh air – for no additional cost.”

The work to purify the PURE staterooms on Crystal Cruises Crystal Serenity is being done by PURE Marine Solutions, which is the sister company of PURE Global, the innovative provider of allergy-friendly rooms and healthy environments for hotels, conference centers, and mega-yachts.

The process involves two phases: Phase 1 is disinfecting and Phase 2 is Prevention and Maintenance.  Read below for a more detailed description of the process provided by Crystal Cruises.

Phase 1: Disinfection

  1. Deep Clean Air-Handling Unit
  2. PURE Clean: involves a deep cleaning of every surface in the cabin.
  3. High Ozone Shock Treatment: An advanced shock treatment completely eliminates particles, viruses, germs, and odors from every inch of the room, resulting in a fresh, crisp environment.

Phase 2: Prevention and Maintenance

  1. Application of a bacteriostatic barrier that is applied to the surfaces in the stateroom will serve as  a repellant to new microorganism growth for up to two years.
  2. Placement of a PURE Tea Tree Oil Cartridge, which is a natural antimicrobial disinfectant.
  3. An air purification system is installed.  The system is listed by the FDA as a Class II Medical Device and is is 150 times more efficient than HEPA and proven to eliminate 100% of organisms from the air as they pass through the purifier.
  4. Allergy-Friendly Bedding. Micro-fiber, mono-filament mattress and pillow encasements add an extra layer of allergen protection while sleeping.

Crystal Cruises reports that the housekeeping staff will be trained in all daily maintenance routines of the PURE staterooms and that PURE specialists will re-service the cabins every six months.
