St. Thomas
There are three ships in port today. Overall, the port seemed a lot less crowded that I remember from a past cruise. Today we experienced a nice breeze and 80 degrees of Caribbean sunshine. If you want more details about what to do in port click here.
The island’s main city and capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Charlotte Amalie, offers passengers brightly colored buildings representing a variety of architectural styles. While the main attraction is the gorgeous water, cruise passengers can go shopping or go on a search to learn about the history of the area. Also, the island’s diverse heritage of Dutch, Spanish and French make eating here quite delicious.
Pirate boat excursion
Brian and I signed up for a half-day cruise to Turtle Cove via a Pirate Schooner. I thought the combination of pirate boat and snorkeling would be a good fit for a 9-year old. As soon as we took a 4-foot swell to the side of the boat and a teenage girl screeched, I knew I was going to have some problems.
My son, who has watched “Pirates of the Caribbean” too many times had a miny-panic-attack. He was certain we were going to capsize. Once we arrived to our destination and he was able to get in the water, everything was ok. He has now earned the nickname of “terror-boy” (by me).” Luckily on the 45-minute trip back we were going with the current and the ride was a lot smoother.
Once we arrive to Buck Island and we were in the water, it was totally worth the trip. The endangered sea turtles snacking on sea grass were very fun to observe.
