 Welcome to Juneau

Rain greets us in Juneau. But as the saying goes, it takes both sun and rain to make a rainbow.  It makes me ponder the gold rush and the hearty environment that greeted the gold prospectors.

Beside the history of Juneau, the landscape is amazing; mountains, streams, waterfalls, and wildlife are abundant.  Princess Cruises offers many ways to enjoy the area through an extensive shore excursion menu and many onboard enrichment programs.

Thanks to Princess Cruises, I have elected to experience southeast Alaska’s abundant wildlife by land and by sea on the Alaska’s Whales & Rainforest Trails eco-tour.

Whale sightings are guaranteed on this unique outing combining marine exploration with a gentle hike on a lush rainforest trail.

Upon return, there are plenty of choices to select from to keep me busy.  I am especially excited for the onboard visit of Iditarod Champion Libby Riddles who will speak about “Sled Dogs and Adventure.”

Libby Riddles, the 1985 Iditarod sled dog race champion and first woman ever to win the famous Anchorage to Nome trek, will be onboard for her ninth Alaska season.  Riddles has become a Princess favorite, enthralling passengers with exploits from her days as a musher.  In her exclusive appearances for Princess, Riddles joins each of the line’s Alaska ships during its call in Juneau.  Taking passengers behind the scenes into the world of dog mushing, she shares her Iditarod experiences while describing what it’s like to live in a native Inupiat village near Nome.  Riddles’ approximately hour-long presentations are held aboard the ship in the afternoon, followed by an opportunity for passengers to ask questions, get autographed copies of her books or pose with her for photos.

The Alaska cruise experience is definitely all about the history, people and the landscape. Each day we have been greeted with breathtaking views and an onboard program designed to maximize our Alaskan cruise.

Princess Cruises held its first-ever Twitter trip last November and invited a group of  travel Twitterers aboard to share their cruise experience with their followers in “real time.”  Based on the enthusiastic response by all the participants (and their followers), Princess Cruises is hosting another Twitter-centric trip this summer to Alaska, and Cruise Buzz will be onboard.

As a guest of Princess Cruises, Cruise Buzz from Cruise Holidays of Mission Vejo has the chance to escape completely on an Alaska cruisetour with Princess Cruises and share your experiences —such as riding the Alaska railroad through pristine wilderness, hiking on a glacier, viewing wildlife and seeing Glacier Bay from your private balcony stateroom, just to name a few.

A Princess Alaska cruisetour enables travelers to experience the best of Alaska by both land and sea—from the tidewater glaciers and sea life, to the beauty of the interior, especially the “jewel” of Alaska, Denali National Park.  Combining a seven-day cruise with a land tour, our trip will run from Tuesday, June 15, through Saturday, June 26, 2010.

The trip begins with three days filled with exciting excursions from Princess’ wilderness lodges, including the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge, Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge.  One of the highlights of the land tour will be traveling through the interior of Alaska on the Princess Rail.

The three days on land will be followed by seven days at sea exploring the glaciers and pioneer Alaska towns aboard Coral Princess.  After departing from Anchorage, the ship will cruise by Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay National Park, before making stops in Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and finally ending in Vancouver.

 Here’s the full itinerary:

  • Day 1: Tuesday, June 15 – Arrive at Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge
  • Day 2: Wednesday, June 16  – Ride the Princess Rail from Fairbanks to Denali
    • Optional land excursions  from Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge
  • Day 3: Thursday, June 17 – Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge
    • National History Tour in Denali National Park
    • Afternoon at leisure and optional land excursions
  • Day 4: Friday, June 18 – Motorcoach from Denali to the McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge
    • Afternoon at leisure and optional land excursions
  • Day 5: Saturday, June 19 – Motorcoach from McKinley to Talkeetna
    • Travel by the McKinley Express Rail from Talkeetna to Whittier
    • Embark Coral Princess
  • Day 6: Sunday, June 20 – Hubbard Glacier cruising
  • Day 7: Monday, June 21 – Glacier Bay National Park cruising
  • Day 8: Tuesday, June 22 – Skagway
  • Day 9: Wednesday, June 23 – Juneau
  • Day 10: Thursday, June 24 – Ketchikan
  • Day 11: Friday, June 25 – Inside Passage cruising
