Mexico’s Sea of Cortés

The journey begins

I can’t wait! Today I head to Los Cabos International Airport from my home airport in Orange County, CA. I will spend the night at a pre-cruise hotel before embarking on Un-Cruise’s Safari Endevour for a 7-night inclusive Sea of Cortés cruise adventure.

The brochure promises an island-hopping adventure cruise in Mexico’s Sea of Cortés. I have been to the region before and can’t wait to go back to explore the terrain that rivals the most beautiful scenery in the world. Internet connectivity might be spotty (mostly unavailable) so this “off-the-grid” trip will be chronicled in dispatches that are contingent upon a cell signal.

Not to worry though, the Un-Cruise experience is going to keep me entertained by providing me (and CruiseJess) with plenty of diversions. I am most looking forward to an active adventure that will include as much wildlife that wants to encounter humans. The area is famous for authentic culture, and wildlife, which can include sightings of sea turtles, boobies, pelicans, frigate birds, blue whales, gray whales, orca, humpback, pilot and fin whales, whale sharks, dolphins, mantas, and sea lions.

Part of the fun will be getting into or on the water in a Kayak to explore the coastal mangroves and glassy coves when we are not hiking along cactus-clad rims and among desert scrub.

Un-Cruise Highlights:

  • Wildlife viewing (if nature permits). I will be on the lookout for whales, mobula rays, dolphins, and birds
  • Gray whale watching at Bahía Magdalena or snorkeling among gentle whale sharks in Bahía de La Paz
  • A desert burro ride with local rancheros into the arroyos of Baja
  • Hike along red-rock cliffs and among myriad cactus for a bird’s-eye view of the bay
  • Snorkel with playful sea lion pups and amid thousands of colorful reef fish
  • Walking tour in the mission-town of Loreto
  • Kayak, paddle board, and skiff exploration in a UNESCO World Heritage Site
